League of Legends is a popular team-based strategy game, where two teams, consisting of 5 champions, fight each other and try to destoy the others’ base and take down towers along the way. The game offers 152 champions to play and experiment with - each of them with skills and specialities fitting for the lanes, which symbolize the paths inside the games map.
League of Legends has become so popular that in 2011 Riot Games actually had their first big - or at that time rather small - World Championship. The prize pool was at about 100k and the viewers reached about 1.6 million.
It got enough recognition to become a returning thing: The viewers grew as did the prize pool and awareness for esports. People got interested in the opportunity that was arising and the possibility of becoming esports pro players.
So another tournament was held in 2012 for the 2nd season and this year it’s the 10th anniversary League of Legends Worlds Championship in 2020.
We have seen teams win, lose, fight for remaining spots and give the best perfomances of their life. We have witnessed big favourites being taken down by underdogs, seen big prize pools and the shiny Summoners Cup!
Now, being close to the 2020 Worlds, which will start in just a few days, we wanted to challenge ourselves and try and remember all the winners of every League of Legend World Championship. Reminisce in all the amazing fights and teams with their players participating in what has become the biggest international epsorts event.
This year’s World Championship will take place in Shanghai and we expect a viewership of about 200 million. Besides that, the prize pool this year includes a whooping $5.07 million to win! On top of that, players will have the chance to buy team specific skins from their favourite teams.
