Jeff Kaplan just left Blizzard. Yes, the director of Overwatch just left Blizzard in the middle of the production of Overwatch 2. What does this mean for the game? Nothing good, right? Right? Well... let's speculate.
First of all: Who is Jeff Kaplan? Jeff Kaplan is basically Papa Overwatch. For better or for worse, Overwatch is his brainchild, and he's been with Blizzard for 20 years. With that being said, the more important question is this:
What Will Happen to Overwatch 2?
The development of Overwatch 2 has been taken over by Aaron Keller, who assures fans that Overwatch 2 is fine. Keller is also a founding member of Overwatch and is confident in the team's ability to deliver on Overwatch 2:
Speaking of Overwatch 2, development is continuing at a good pace. We have an exceptional vision we’re executing on, the reaction from many of you to the updates we shared at BlizzConline thrilled us, and we have exciting reveals planned for this year and beyond as we ramp to launch. We’ll be sharing more frequent updates about Overwatch 2 progress and new features in the live game with you all very soon.
Sounds good, right? Then again... what else is he supposed to say? "This is it guys, we're absolutely F'd. Don't buy the game, it'll be a disaster! Damn you Kaplan! Damn you!"
Is this the End for Overwatch 2?
No, not at all. Some fans might even be happy to see Kaplan leave. Kaplan was the center of a lot of controversy regarding Overwatch's lack of updates and the Hong Kong censorship scandal. Maybe Keller will be much better at listening to the community and reacting to feedback. Arguably, the poor implementation of community demands and slow balancing patches were part of Overwatch's slight fall from grace.
Having Kaplan gone might bring a breath of fresh air – maybe it's exactly the change that Overwatch 2 needed to become the game we all hope it will be.
