Valorant has been in closed beta for over two weeks now and already received its first couple of balance patches. More details about the title’s competitive system got revealed recently thanks to a leak.

Riot haven’t had it easy this month as the release of the closed beta for their upcoming shooter had its fair share of trouble. The company had server issues on day one, complaints about a certain agent (you know which one), its first batch of hackers, and a big discussion over the intrusiveness of the Vanguard anti-cheat. On a brighter note we know for certain that ranked matchmaking or rather rated matchmaking will be making its way into the closed beta. Players will get a chance to experience the system firsthand before the game’s launch in summer. Hopefully it’ll balance things out for most people so games won’t be as one-sided as they are now.

The competitive ranks/medals

We’ve seen the names of the ranks before but according to a leak, they’re all about to change. Reddit user FloxaY revealed the info.

The old names were as follows:

  • Mercenary
  • Soldier
  • Veteran
  • Hero
  • Legend
  • Mythic
  • Immortal
  • Valorant

To be fair they all sounded rather generic so we’re glad Riot reconsidered.

They get respectively changed to:

  • Iron
  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Diamond
  • Immortal
  • Valorant

Or in other words the League of Legends standard with a twist in the end. Excellent idea by Riot. They have a very successful and popular game and they’re trying to make another big hit. Chances are a lot of the people from LoL will be playing Valorant, so they’ll be quite familiar with the ranks from the go. Anyone else just joining in probably wouldn't care that much in the first place. Sure there’s not that much flavor like in the old version, but maybe simpler is better right? Which version of the ranks/medals do you prefer? Are you coming from LoL?

So when is ranked coming?

The last info we officially received from Riot employees was back on April 10 and it claimed a few weeks.

According to math, it should be soon. Yeah, we know. April is almost coming to an end so Riot still have some leftover time to fulfill their initial promise. Many other questions arise – will there be visible MMR, will there be a lot of placement matches, will players receive a matchmaking cooldown when playing too many ranked games initially? All of those and more will eventually get answered by Riot, but until then we can only wait.
