All Mutate beasts are cool, but which ones are the coolest?
Top 7 coolest Mutate creatures in MTG
Vulpikeet - Let’s start off strong with the amazing Vulpikeet. It’s half-bird and half-fox - cunning, cute, and nimble! Honestly, the very word Mutate has a somewhat negative connotation, bringing to mind images of beast-like monstrosities and nightmarish abominations. But good old Vulpikeet is neither of these things. How can you not love this little guy! Keeping a Vulpikeet as a pet would be the coolest thing. Well, maybe second only to an actual pokémon.
Illuna, Apex of Wishes - Cunning? Check. Nimble? Check. Cute? Eh… not so much. Illuna is a creepy Beast Elemental Dinosaur that has this aura of dangerous intelligence about here. This isn’t a mindless beast, far from it! Please her, and you might get a wish granted. Cross her, and you’ll be torn to pieces in ways you might not even be able to comprehend.
Cloudpiercer - Let’s marvel at this classic dino for a change. Big, strong and absolutely majestic, this peaceful creature is poking its massive head above the clouds and enjoying the sunlight, while a pack of birds is keeping it company. But there is a catch. Those red things at its feet are mutation crystals. You can only imagine how this body can twist and turn under their effect! Judging by its pose, it is quite possible for a pair of bat-like wings to grow out of its back any moment now!
Regal Leosaur - Psst, do you like dinosaurs? Of course, you do! How about cats? Come on, who doesn’t! What’s better than a half-dino, half-cat? Nothing! Okay, technically, all the entries down this list are cooler, but only slightly. And it’s not the Leosaur’s fault!
Necropanther - Now that’s a big cat! As if being a panther wasn’t cool enough, this guy is a necropanther! This sounds like straight up like a heavy metal band name… and doing a quick Google search reveals that yes, such a band actually exists! Cool!
Cavern Whisperer - Did you think the Necropanther deserves a “creepiest creature” award? Maybe a “best supporting creepy creature” will fit it better, because the Cavern Whisperer is here! That’s what we call creepy! Long Venomesque tongue, evil flowing fur and many vicious little eyes. And then you start counting its limbs! Yuck, this is one of the grossest things on Ikoria… in the coolest possible way!
Surgeon General Commander - Drum roll, please! We’ve got our winner! Ha, we bet you didn’t expect that one! He’s not even from Ikoria, but he does contain the word “mutate” in his text box, so it’s fair game. Yes, the Surgeon General Commander is one of the most absurd creatures not only in this list but in all of Magic. Once you see the words “Legendary Creature - Wombat Bat Chameleon” written on an MTG card, you know there can never be anything cooler. Ever.
Ikoria brought the very interesting and somewhat controversial keyword Mutate, that allows monsters to stick on top of one another and form unimaginable monstrosities worthy of a Godzilla movie. That’s all well and good, but which one is the coolest?
