Rocket League started small and has grown incredibly big over time. So big that it’s become a fully functioning esport with a lot of major organizations being represented on the professional scene. The game got an additional spike by going free-to-play in 2020, which made it even more popular.

None of this means that you should not look for alternatives, even if it’s your favorite title ever. We looked around and found five video games suitable to add some variety to a Rocket League player without taking him or her too far from the comfort zone.

Ball 3D: Soccer Online is free and offers you a variety of game modes - football, handball, hockey, racing - you name it. All this with an incredibly realistic engine and, of course, multiplayer.

Heavy Metal Machines also costs nothing at all and offers an interesting mix of cars and MOBA mechanics. You compete as a team of four with cars of your choice in an arena and have to secure a bomb, drive it into the base of the opponents and explode it there. Team play is the MOBA-typical focus here.

In Laser League, you also compete in different arenas. Your goal is to survive as long as possible and to avoid the lasers. With your class-specific skills, you increase your own chances of survival or put your opponents under pressure.

Roller Champions has not yet been released but has been announced as a free-to-play title for early 2021. Instead of using cars, you'll race through the arena on roller skates, trying to score as many points as possible by throwing a ball through a ring. You can ram opponents and prevent them from scoring in a variety of ways.

Destruction Allstars is also announced for early 2021 and offers an interesting new approach. There are 16 characters, each with a unique vehicle. The goal of the game is to destroy the vehicles of the other players. However, the game is not over when your vehicle is destroyed - you continue on foot! You have to be careful not to get run over, but your character skills remain, so you can keep molesting the other vehicles.

Do any of these sound enticing? We certainly look forward to Destruction Allstars. That sweet, sweet wreckage!
