Speculation is spinning in Rocket League's online community that Rocket League could be shutting down, following Psyonix's choice to take the title off Linux and MacOS systems early last year. We want to set a few things straight, and answer one very important question: is Rocket League shutting down?
In March of 2020, Rocket League was taken off both Linux and MacOS systems, with Psyonix issuing refunds to players. The reason for the Rocket League shutdown was cited to be ongoing technical issues with both Linux and MacOS systems, with Psyonix explaining in a statement:
Rocket League is an evolving game, and part of that evolution is keeping our game client up to date with modern features. As part of that evolution, we'll be updating our Windows version from 32-bit to 64-bit later this year, as well as updating to DirectX 11 from DirectX 9... Unfortunately, our macOS and Linux native clients depend on our DX9 implementation for their OpenGL renderer to function. When we stop supporting DX9, those clients stop working...
This begs many-a-question, but was also quite a long time ago at this point. So why are people still asking "Is Rocket League shutting down?" What's going on with our beloved game?
Is Rocket League Shutting Down?
Rocket League is not shutting down, and will not shut down for a long time. In March 2020, the game was removed from MacOS and Linux systems due to hardware differences that could not be accounted for, but the game will not be totally shutting down for many years to come.
A few years ago, there was speculation that Rocket League would be shutting down due its alleged financial loss in 2019. We want to make it insanely clear that these claims are utterly false. Rocket League is not shutting down, and not only were these rumors unfounded, but Epic Game's purchase of Rocket League has brought in a new age of prosperity for the title.
So is Rocket League shutting down? No, don't be silly. Season 3 might have sucked, but it ain't the end for our favorite car-football game. Hush, hush, hush. Everything will be fine. Just go play Rocket League... and go eat a pizza.
