Black Myth: Wukong is a Chinese action-RPG that has attracted a lot attention since its announcement last year. Now, there is a new gameplay trailer that shows a number of fresh elements. We have all the info on the release date, trailer, bosses, enemies and everything else you need to know.

Black Myth: Wukong is an upcoming action role-playing game from Chinese developer Game Science, based on the classic 16th century Chinese novel, Journey to the West. Ever since the game was announced, gamers from all over the world have been waiting to finally take on the role of the powerful, ape-like creature. However, it seems they will have to be patient.

Unfortunately, an exact release date has not been set yet. However, in an interview with IGN China in 2020, Game Science said that they plan to release Black Myth: Wukong by 2023. Oof... so, that means we still have a long wait ahead of us!

But the developer would rather take their time, and make a bombastic game, than one that ends up being a buggy mess (Cyberpunk vibes, anyone?). Game Science plans to release the game for both PC and mainstream consoles. The game will be sold as a one-time purchase, with possible DLC.

Black Myth: Wukong Trailer

Even though we don't know much about the game itself yet, an official gameplay trailer, as well as a gameplay-demo trailer, has been released, giving us at least a little insight into Black Myth: Wukong. The official trailer first shows frame rates that almost take our breath away: Sandy landscapes from a fictional world that almost looks too real to be from a game. We also get a glimpse of the fights and animations from Black Myth: Wukong.

Also, lovely are the small details that make the character stir up the dust in battle, for example. From the flames that come out of the fiery blades, to the monstrous mouths of the enemies, to the weapons themselves – everything looks insanely real. Our hero repeatedly uses a number of combos and special attacks to defeat his enemies, and it looks awesome.

But the gameplay trailer doesn't leave much to be desired, beginning with the words:

“You must have heard the stories about him... some say he helped Tang Seng get the Buddhist scriptures, and became the victorious, fighting Buddha.
From then on, he stayed in Lingshan.
Some say that it was not he who was granted Buddhahood.
The True One already died on the journey to the West.
Some say there is no such journey. He is just a storyteller. Fictitious. A monkey.
But you probably don't know the story I'm going to tell. This story begins with the golden cicada...”

Suddenly, you find yourself in the middle of the story, and about to have your first fight. See for yourself:

Black Myth: Wukong Enemies and Bosses

In both trailers, we already encounter a lot of enemies. In a desert-like area covered in dead plants, and littered with temple-like buildings, we see fast-paced battles against acrobatic wolf-like humanoids and a spear and shield-carrying rat. Another enemy is what appears to be a lightning-fast mage, and a swarm of miniature attackers with red eyes. We also see a number of boss-like opponents, from a giant, fleshy rodent to a two-headed, fire-breathing, rat-creature to a giant humanoid ox, or a giant insect monster.

However, a text in the video clarifies:

“This video was produced specifically to celebrate the Year of the Ox, it does not represent any actual action.“

However, it seems unlikely that some of the above elements were designed just for the trailer, which means that they will probably be implemented in the final game in a different way. If any new info or leaks about Black Myth emerge, we'll keep you updated, of course.
