When it comes to the popular MOBA genre there are two big titles – League of Legends and Dota 2. The latter came first but is currently the less popular one and there are a couple of reasons for that. First and foremost, Dota 2 doesn’t have nearly as much marketing as Riot’s LoL. The second big reason is the game’s fabled difficulty that stops all newcomers in their tracks. While that is mostly an exaggeration there are plenty of mechanics that you’ll have to get used to. Whereas League is easy to pick up but hard to master, Dota 2 is hard to pick up and even harder to master. This kills the desire of many players and they lose their will to play. Valve are really not helping with that, as the game has no proper in-game tutorial that’ll introduce people to some specific situations and mechanics. It’s something the community has been asking for for a long time, but the devs still haven’t delivered.

The title’s meta isn’t set in place like in LoL, which makes the experience from game to game vary greatly. Dota 2 is a game with quite a lot of mechanics behind it and it’s sometimes hard to keep track of all of them. Everything becomes even more demanding when you add patches, which can drastically change the game and how it all works.

The only way to get better at Dota 2 is to play it and get enough understanding through your own personal experience or to look for a shortcut online. With our Dota 2 Tips & Tricks series, we’ll give you some useful hints. Take a look at some lesser-known mechanics that can help you counter certain picks and strategies.
