Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone Season 5 went live yesterday and as expected, brought a lot of new features along. The roadmap is out and we can now check out what we got on the first day of Season 5 and what we're going to get as it unfolds.
We got some Season 5 info in advance thanks to leaks and the teasers released ahead of the release. But now that patch 1.24 is live and the official roadmap is announced, we can present you everything in official capacity and preview what's going to happen in the coming weeks.
What We Got at the Start of Season 5
A lot of new features come right at the start of the new season while others will be added later in the season. Let's first take a look at the new features that were made available by patch 1.24.
New Modern Warfare Maps
There are four new maps for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer. With Petrov Oil Rig and Suldal Harbor come two regular 6v6 maps. Livestock is a new, small 3v3 Firefight map and Verdansk Intl. Airport brings some fresh air for the Ground War mode.
Warzone Map Changes
There are several major alterations in Verdansk. Starting with:
We have been waiting for it for a long time and finally the time has come: the stadium of Verdansk has been opened. This means there's a completely new venue for either looting or fighting. Expect everyone to be flocking to the stadium at the start of the season. Better come prepared. If you want to take a look at the stadium outside of the game where it's safe, you can do so here.
Another anticipated addition to the Verdansk dynamic is the train, which will now pass through the map. It will also give you access to the entire station building, which opens another looting location. The train can be used as a means of transport of course, but it also contains loot that can be fought for.
A new feature that will make life harder for all rooftop campers are the new ziplines. They are attached to larger buildings and allow players to quickly climb them from the outside, thus making camping a not so bulletprood strategy anymore.
Lerch, the leader of the Shadow Company, is the brand new operator introduced at the beginning of Season 5. We have an article dedicated to his real-life background, which you can check out right after you're done with this one.
With a new season comes a new Battle Pass. With a new Battle Pass come two new weapons. At level 15 you unlock the submachine gun ISO, which was leaked some time ago under the name APC9. An assault rifle, the AN-94, awaits us at level 31. As always with new weaponry, we're curious to see if these weapons will be able to compete with the current top weapons. We're going to give them a few spins and come back to you with a detailed guide shortly.
New Game Modes
Search and Destroy Double Down mode is introduced to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It's just Search and Destroy with double the number of players - 12v12 instead of 6v6.
For Warzone, there's the Mini Royale mode. A slimmed down version of the standard Battle Royale. There are fewer operators and only the first and last five minutes of a regular match are played. You have to move much faster and you will be involved in fights much more often, which is an interesting twist to the game of cat and mouse that is usually a Battle Royale.
What Else Can We Expect of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone Season 5?
There are surely going to be surprises in the course of it all, but the confirmed features coming to Modern Warfare and Warzone during Season 5 thus far are:
One More Operator
The new operator Velikan can already be seen in both trailers and several pictures and will expand the Shadow Company during Season 5. The Coalition will get another operator later on, Morte, who belongs to the Warcom faction. Both operators will be available via bundles in the store at a later date.
More Game Modes
Bare Bones is a new multiplayer mode in which various well-known game modes are played without killstreaks, field upgrades and perks. It all depends on your skill. If you've always found Killstreaks unfair or too random, this is a game mode where the only thing that counts is who has better control over their weapons.
Ground War Reinforced is a new game mode for, yeah, Ground War. Respawning is only possible if your team captures a flag.
A new mode is coming to Warzone too, it's going to be called King Slayer. Nothing is known about this mode yet, but there was a medal in earlier Call of Duty titles with the same name. To get it, you had to take out the highest-ranked player on the opposing team. The Warzone mode could work in a similar way.
It's clear that there will be more weapons coming our way throughout Season 5. So far, only the melee weapon Dual Kodachi has been confirmed. These are Japanese swords that are likely to work similarly to the Kali Sticks.
A second weapon will be added at some point, but we have no info on it yet. As soon as we do, we'll take that info to you. The new weapons will probably be unlocked via challenges or will be purchasable as part of a bundle.
Finally, the mysterious mid-season event. We have no idea what this is all about, but we can look at Season 4 for clues. Then, the major Reloaded update was dropped in similar mid-season fashion. It brought the Rytec AMR weapon, a new map, a new operator and much more all at once. Maybe we can expect something similar from the Season 5 mid-season event.
